PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER NOTICE--JUNE 6, 2023
TO: RESIDENTS OF CENTURY, FLORIDA, LIVING ON PLEASANT HILL RD., JUNK RD, FIELDS RD, CARTER LANE, NALL RD, AND 1341 WEST HIGHWAY 4 TO 370 W. HIGHWAY 4.
What should I do? As a precaution, we advise that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. Or residents can disinfect water by adding 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of common household bleach (unscented) to water; stir; let it rest for 30 minutes before drinking. Residents are also advised to take precautions when bathing, especially immuno-compromised individuals, infants, or the elderly.
What happened? A leak was discovered on W. Highway 4, near the intersection of Nall Road. The leak was valved off until repairs could be done. When service is completely stopped, or when a loss of sufficient water pressure occurs, this could cause backsiphonage of contaminants, such as e. Coli bacteria, into the water system. Water containing e. Coli bacteria can be considered safe for drinking and cooking after vigorously boiling the water. Disease symptoms caused by these bacteria may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and possibly jaundice, and any associated headache and fatigue. EPA has set an enforceable drinking water standard for e. Coli to reduce the risk of these adverse health effects. Under this standard all drinking water must be free of these bacteria.
What is being done? The damaged water main will be replaced beginning in the morning on Wednesday, June, 2023, After the new water main is installed, Central Water Works will collect samples to determine if the presence of e. Coli bacteria exists within the water system. This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink. The anticipated date for rescinding this notice is Friday afternoon, June 9, 2023. Residents will be notified by phone, email, or text.
